Protect students’ right to self-expression through unnatural hair colours
Update national school uniform and appearance guidance to prevent schools from sanctioning students from having unnaturally coloured hair, unless there is a clear safeguarding reason.
Many schools restrict unnaturally coloured hair even though it does not affect learning, behaviour, or safety. Students should be allowed appropriate self-expression without facing punishment or sanctions. Hair colour does not impact academic performance. Updating national guidance would promote fairness, confidence, and individuality while maintaining school standard
