Require all political election campaign materials to be in English or Welsh.
Amend the Representation of the People Act 1983 and Elections Act 2022 to mandate that all election campaign literature and materials, including videos, leaflets, and broadcasts, must be produced in English or Welsh to ensure transparency, accountability, and national cohesion.
Current law allows parties to target specific communities with messages inaccessible to the wider electorate, risking sectarian politics. A manifesto is an open contract; no material should bypass public scrutiny or allow for political shape-shifting. In a liberal democracy, all voters must be able to scrutinise candidate claims. Mandating our national language ensures a single platform for political debate, focusing on shared civic concerns and holding leaders accountable as a unified public.
