Petition Action

Increase student loan repayment thresholds with inflation

Petition Details

Abandon the policy of freezing the thresholds at which student loans are repaid and instead increase the repayment thresholds in line with inflation.

Additional Information

Thresholds for repaying student loans should not be frozen. Freezing thresholds whilst the interest on loans is linked to inflation disproportionately affects low and middle income graduates over high income graduates and non-graduates at a time when an educated workforce is critical for the nations economy and competitiveness. It also disincentivises graduates’ productivity since they effectively pay a higher rate of tax despite being low or middle earners.
