Require stricter standards for Type 1 diabetes support in schools
Introduce stricter, enforceable, national standards for supporting pupils with Type 1 diabetes in schools. Including mandatory training for sufficient staff to cover the school day, more consistent implementation of healthcare plans, and clearer accountability when support fails.
Families across the UK report children with Type 1 diabetes being left without safe support in school. Evidence from tribunals, charities and parliamentary submissions shows care plans are often not followed, that schools rely on a single trained member of staff, that parents are expected to attend school, and that children sometimes miss education due to unsafe provision. A child’s safety should not depend on their postcode or individual school decisions.
