Review financial harm safeguards for domestic abuse victims in joint mortgages

Petition Details

Require mortgage lenders to introduce stronger safeguards for victims of domestic abuse in joint mortgages, including mandatory communication with all borrowers and protections where vulnerability markers are present.

Additional Information

Victims of domestic abuse can remain legally liable for joint mortgages while lenders communicate mainly with the other borrower. This can cause financial harm, including arrears, extra charges and damage to credit records. Where abuse or vulnerability is identified, stronger safeguards are needed to ensure lenders do not contribute to further financial or economic abuse.
