Repeal the Internal Markets Act 2020.
We call on the UK Government to repeal the Internal Markets Act 2020, because we think it undermines devolution and the ability of the Scottish Government, Senedd Cymru and the Northern Ireland Assembly to legislate effectively in their devolved areas.
In our view, the Sewel Convention should be honoured.
It has been reported that in a leaked memorandum to UK Cabinet Ministers, the Prime Minister said that Ministers should not use an overly deferential approach in engaging with the devolved governments and be confident in their ability to deliver DIRECTLY to the devolved areas even though the devolved parliaments may oppose this interference. We think the Internal Markets Act enables this undemocratic interference with the devolved settlements, and that we need to return to a position where the Sewel Convention has primacy & is respected by UK Gov.
We need to return to a position where the Sewel Convention has primacy & is respected by UK Gov.
