Introduce an AI Agent Tax for companies
We want the Government to introduce legislation for an "AI Agent Tax" at a higher rate of tax on companies operating in the UK that use AI agents, compared to the standard employer National Insurance Contributions (NIC) applied to human employees.
Tax rate at least 50% higher than equivalent employer NIC for the employees replaced.
We believe AI and automation are displacing entry-level jobs, leading to high underemployment among graduates and young workers. We think this tax would encourage companies to prioritise real people over AI for roles such as data entry, customer service, or basic analysis. We think making AI more expensive protects human employment without banning innovation while generating revenue for job retraining programs. This addresses growing job market imbalances without favouring specific industries.
