Review regulation of social media algorithms that amplify harmful content

Petition Details

Introduce stronger regulation and oversight of social media algorithms that amplify harmful content. Require greater transparency about recommendation systems and give regulators stronger powers to ensure platforms reduce the spread of harmful material.

Additional Information

Social media platforms use algorithms designed to maximise engagement. These systems can amplify harmful content, misinformation and abuse because such material drives attention and interaction. This contributes to harassment, social division and the rapid spread of misleading information. Current regulation does not adequately address the systemic risks created by algorithmic amplification.
