Permanent return of “Sumer is icumen in” manuscript to Reading
I want the government to support the permanent allocation of the “Sumer is icumen in” manuscript, currently on loan from the British Library, to the new Reading Central Library, ensuring it is housed locally and displayed prominently as part of its permanent collection.
“Sumer is icumen in” is a 13th-century manuscript of major historical importance with strong ties to Reading Abbey. Keeping it locally would preserve and celebrate Reading’s heritage, improve public access, and support education. Displaying it prominently in the new library would create a cultural focal point, strengthen community identity, and ensure this unique artefact is experienced in its proper historical context.
