Review SATs and GCSEs to reduce exam reliance and increase inclusive assessment.
We think high-stakes exams affect children’s mental health and disadvantages many pupils, especially those with SEND, and negatively impact attendance and inclusion. A review is needed. More project-based and continuous assessment could create a fairer system where all children thrive and succeed.
We think if the Government is serious about SEND reform and inclusion, it must listen to lived experience which suggests that high-stakes testing and a one-size-fits-all system disadvantage pupils with SEND, and many other pupils, leading to disengagement and poor wellbeing. In our view, as assessment drives the system, SATs and GCSEs must be reviewed, and should include more coursework and continuous assessment. Reforms could improve pupil wellbeing, inclusion, attendance and engagement, and help restore a love of learning for all.
