Petition Action

Hold a consultation & publish a national strategy for foreign language teaching

Petition Details

We call on Government to consult with language teachers across all educational levels & use this evidence to develop a modern national strategy for foreign language teaching.

This strategy should address curriculum content, assessment methods, & the level of difficulty in language qualifications.

Additional Information

Foreign language learning in the UK is in long-term decline, with falling GCSE and A-level uptake and a shortage of teachers.

This has consequences for the UK’s global competitiveness, cultural understanding, and ability to engage internationally.

We call on the Government to publish a national strategy for foreign language education, including:
• measures to improve teacher recruitment & retention
• support for schools to expand language provision
• steps to increase student participation
