Petition Action

Ban chemical flame retardants in UK furniture to align with EU standards

Petition Details

Ban chemical flame retardant in UK furniture which may cause harm. Studies link such chemicals to cancer & other serious health risks. UK rules expose households to potentially higher levels than the EU. Reform fire safety laws to eliminate unnecessary toxic exposure in homes & protect public health

Additional Information

UK furniture contains very high levels of flame retardant chemicals due to current fire safety rules. Some of these chemicals have been linked to cancer, hormone disruption and developmental issues, and they can accumulate in household dust where families and children are exposed daily. We believe the EU achieves high levels of fire safety without using many of these chemicals, proving they are unnecessary. The UK should prioritise public health and urgently reform these regulations.
