Regulate headlight brightness to reduce dangerous glare on UK roads
Introduce limits on headlight brightness, colour and beam height; require real-world glare testing; strengthen MOT enforcement; and mandate automatic levelling systems to reduce dangerous glare from modern vehicles.
Many drivers are regularly dazzled by modern headlights, even on dipped beam, reducing visibility and increasing collision risk. Official figures link glare to hundreds of crashes and several fatalities each year, but this is likely underreported as glare leaves no evidence. Current standards do not reflect real-world conditions, leaving drivers exposed to avoidable risk.
