Ban oversized flag poles and flags in residential gardens.
Introduce planning rules requiring permits for permanent residential flag poles above a set height. Flags flown continuously, outside national events, that cause disputes, obstruct views, pose wind-safety risks, or are linked to intimidation should require council approval.
Temporary flag displays for events like the World Cup or royal celebrations are a welcome expression of community pride. This petition does not restrict them. However, permanent oversized flag poles in residential gardens pose real concerns; safety risks in high winds, obstruction of light and views, and in some cases intimidation of neighbours from different backgrounds, contrary to Britain’s values of tolerance and respect. We call for council approval to be required for flag poles.
