Ensure the Independent Football Regulator can intervene in unfair EFL sanctions.
We call on the Government to grant the new Independent Football Regulator the specific authority to review and overrule sporting sanctions imposed by the EFL when they threaten the financial viability or basic infrastructure of historic community assets.
Current EFL sanctions, such as the 15-point penalty facing Sheffield Wednesday, are often disproportionate and fail to account for unique distress, such as legacy debt or critical infrastructure failure. When the EFL denies independent arbitration, clubs and fans are left with no recourse. The Government must ensure the Regulator can step in to protect clubs from regulatory decisions that risk their survival or prevent essential safety and sanitation upgrades.
