Restrict the right of MP's to use the title of Honourable and Rt Honourable

Petition Details

I would like parliament to debate the withdrawing of courtesy titles Honourable and Rt Honourable in an instance where an MP or Government minister has behaved in an unethical, dishonest or dishonourable manner for example lying to parliament or intentionally deceiving the public

Additional Information

I feel strongly that individuals should be restricted from holding and using titles that indicate a level of honesty and trustworthiness if their actions and behaviour in public life and in the furtherance of their duties do not reflect this. Perhaps in the same way the whip can be withdrawn, the EIC could adjudicate withdrawing titles for a set period following an ethics violation.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Not the Government/Parliament’s responsibility

Appointments to the Privy Council, which determines whether a person is referred to as "Right Honourable", are made by the Sovereign and are for life, so this is not something the Government or House of Commons are responsible for. You can find out more about the Privy Council here: privycouncil.independent.gov.uk/
