Introduce a structured possession route where alternative housing is available
Introduce a structured legal process allowing possession of a rented property where suitable alternative accommodation is independently assessed and approved by a court or tribunal, ensuring tenants are protected and properly housed throughout any relocation.
The current system prioritises possession rules over housing outcomes, which can limit flexibility even where tenants could be securely rehoused. A structured process would ensure tenants are never left without suitable accommodation while allowing fair and efficient management of housing stock. It would reduce disputes and court cases where equivalent housing exists, and ensure decisions are made transparently under judicial oversight with strong safeguards for tenants.
