Amend laws to protect pet cats in dog attacks and road traffic incidents
Amend the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 to include offences where a dog attacks and kills or seriously injures a pet cat on private property. Amend the Road Traffic Act 1988 to require drivers to report collisions involving cats.
Pet cats are common companion animals but have less legal protection than dogs, service animals, and livestock. The Dangerous Dogs Act does not cover cats, so serious attacks may not be offences. Drivers are not required to report hitting cats. Incidents are regularly reported but no offence may be recorded, showing a gap in the law. These changes would provide proportionate protection in serious cases.
