Petition Action

Create a new law against people that post malicious content on social media.

Petition Details

Malicious content such as accusation of rape/paedophillia etc when untrue causes immense stress and harm to innocent individuals. Usually done as revenge or to cause harm to the individual this type of behaviour can lead to physical assaults or death.

Additional Information

This recently happened to a family member and we had posts shared across Facebook. Had death threats and unsavoury messages, calls etc. all based on information that was entirely untrue. The account was fake and the original poster unknown to us. Police will not investigate due to the resources involved which is only reserved for serious crimes such as murder or rape etc. the law needs to be changed so that IP addresses or details of the account can be gained via law enforcement

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do. There are already laws in place such as the Defamation Act 2013, the Malicious Communications Act 1988, the Communications Act 2003, and the Online Safety Act which places a legal duty on service providers to remove unlawful or harmful content including defamatory content.

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do, which differs from existing laws.
