Improvement of early pregnancy and maternity care
Early ultrasound at 6–8 weeks aids timely viability confirmation and complication detection. Progesterone may be considered for women with early bleeding and prior miscarriage, while APS testing is usually reserved for recurrent pregnancy loss rather than routine first-scan screening.
The government should better support families in early pregnancy. NHS scans at 10–14 weeks could be supplemented with 6–8 week ultrasounds to confirm viability and detect complications sooner. Those with a prior miscarriage should have access to reassurance and progesterone where appropriate, as supported by evidence and NICE. Routine testing for antiphospholipid syndrome could also improve pregnancy safety.
