The 45p mileage rate (2011) longer reflects the true cost of driving.
The UK Government must urgently review the 45p AMAP rate. Fuel costs are up 44%, cumulative inflation has reached 55%, and vehicle repair costs rise annually. This rate no longer covers the true cost of business travel. Employees deserve fair, inflation-linked reimbursement now.
When the 45p mileage rate was introduced in 2011, petrol averaged 118p per litre and diesel 131p. Today petrol stands at 156.8p and diesel at 188.8p, representing increases of 33% and 44% respectively. Prior to the Iran conflict, prices had already risen significantly. Fuel alone forms a substantial part of every business mile driven. Reimbursing employees at a rate calculated against 2011 fuel prices, while they pay 2026 prices at the pump, is fundamentally unfair and financially unsustainable.
