Make every vote count: Proportional Representation for UK General Elections
We call on the Government and Parliament to introduce a proportional voting system for UK general elections before the end of this Parliament, based on the model already used for Senedd elections in Wales, so that future parliaments more fairly reflect the democratic will of the people.
The recent election confirmed that the UK’s political landscape is now shaped by several major parties, yet the current First Past the Post system was designed for a different political reality. Every vote should count equally. Furthermore, parties supporting PR collectively received the large majority of votes cast at the last election: Reform UK adopted it in its 2024 manifesto; the Green Party and Liberal Democrats have long supported PR; and the Labour Conference voted for it in 2022.
