Petition to Reform the National Curriculum

Petition Details

The National Curriculum should be reformed to better prepare students for adult life, modern careers, and the future. More focus should be placed on practical skills such as finance, employment, technology, and mental health rather than unnecessary memorisation and exam-focused learning.

Additional Information

Teachers across the country have also raised concerns that the current system places excessive pressure on memorisation and examinations rather than practical understanding, creativity, and personal development.

We call on the Government and the Department for Education to review and modernise the National Curriculum so that it better reflects the realities of modern society and properly prepares young people for the future.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

The Government commissioned a review which reported in November of last year. The Government is currently taking forward its recommendations.

This is a link to the review:

The review says "The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and trends in digital information demand heightened media literacy and critical thinking, as well as digital skills. Likewise, global challenges, both social and environmental, require attention to scientific and cultural knowledge and skills."
"We have examined the evidence to identify those most in need of critical attention. These include the areas mentioned above, plus important areas such as financial literacy and oracy. We have recommended ways to make sure these are properly incorporated into the curriculum through all key stages."
