Reform child maintenance enforcement to stop deliberate payment evasion
We want the Government to strengthen Child Maintenance Service enforcement against deliberate payment evasion, improve transparency on payments, arrears and debt repayment, investigate hidden income and undeclared earnings, and introduce stronger penalties for repeat non-payment.
The child maintenance system allows some parents to avoid paying by changing jobs, underreporting income, delaying reassessments, or hiding earnings while arrears build. Children and receiving parents face debt, hardship, and poverty while enforcement remains slow. Receiving parents need full transparency on payments, arrears, and recovery plans. Child maintenance is a child welfare issue. Government must strengthen enforcement and review tougher international measures.
