Ban MPs from doing parliamentary duties while under the influence of alcohol
Introduce rules prohibiting MPs from taking part in debates or votes while impaired by alcohol. Alcohol impairs judgement, concentration and decision-making and is prohibited in most high-responsibility workplaces.
Alcohol impairs judgement, concentration, impulse control and decision-making by affecting brain function, including reduced inhibition and increased risk-taking. UK guidance defines binge drinking as 6 units (women) or 8 units (men) in a single session, which can be reached quickly with 3 medium glasses of wine. MPs make decisions and vote on major public interest issues including public spending, housing, healthcare and children’s services, which should not be made while impaired by alcohol.
