Petition Action

Review and Remove Public Carry Exemptions for Bladed Articles

Petition Details

We call on the UK Government to amend Section 139 of the Criminal Justice Act 1988 to remove all current exemptions that allow the possession and carrying of knives, swords, and large bladed articles in public spaces for religious, cultural, or national costume reasons.

Additional Information

Current legislation allows exemptions for carrying knives and swords in public for religious reasons or national costume. The presence of large, lethal blades in public spaces presents an inherent risk to public safety, regardless of context. To protect the public and create clear standards for policing, the law must apply universally. We urge the Government to repeal these specific exemptions in Section 139 of the Criminal Justice Act 1988 and enforce a total ban with no exceptions.
