Replace Victorian Prisons With Modern, Therapeutic, Rehabilitative Facilities.
We call on the government to gut the interiors of outdated prisons, repurpose the land for public good, and build new, nature-focused rehabilitative facilities that meet international human rights laws, WHO hygiene standards, and promote mental and physical health for successful rehabilitation.
Many existing prisons across the UK currently fail to comply with international human rights laws; they are inhumane, severely overcrowded and breed disease, due to toilets placed directly next to beds. The lack of natural light, ventilation, and views of greenery severely damages mental health. Research shows that simple, spacious cells with views of nature cut reoffending. We must shift from punitive, unhygienic environments to therapeutic architecture that respects basic human rights.
