Call a general election before the next Prime Minister takes office
We call on the Government to call a general election, so that the public decides who governs the country and who serves as Prime Minister, rather than that decision being made by the members of a single political party.
On 22 June 2026 Sir Keir Starmer announced he will resign as Prime Minister. His likely successor, Andy Burnham, was not an MP at the 2024 general election and had not sat in the Commons since 2017. He returned only via the Makerfield by-election on 18 June 2026, a vote in one seat alone. No Prime Minister should take office without a current national mandate. We call on the Government to dissolve Parliament and hold a general election, so the whole country, not one party, chooses who governs.
