Petition Action

National Service for Young People

Additional Information

The Government should re-introduce into the UK a one or two year period of compulsory National Service for 18 to 25 year olds.
Unlike after the Second World War, this period of national service for young people of both genders should not be in the military, but should be in social areas where some of the most severe austerity cuts have had to be made and where their help is most urgently needed - hospitals, care for the elderly and disabled, education, community schemes, local environmental and infrastructure projects etc.
This would go some way to solving the current employment problems facing young people, but more importantly it would give young people a greater sense of their important place in society, a feeling that they have a real stake in society and that they have a responsibility to and for the community that they live and work in.
