Special prosecution and sentencing guidelines for those involved in rioting and civil unrest

Additional Information

In light of the recent civil disobedience, riots and looting seen throughout the UK, we the undersigned demand an immediate review of the prosecution and sentencing guidelines for those whom the Police have reason to believe were involved in the aforementioned riots, to ensure that society shows that such behaviour is absolutely not tolerated within the UK.

Such a review should include options to ensure that:

- the police and CPS are successfully able to bring about a prosecution, where normally this may prove difficult - appropriately severe punishment are available to the courts - that ‘first offence’ guidelines can be ignored in all prosecutions - confiscation orders (for luxury goods such as TVs, computer games equipment etc), attachment to earnings and / or reduction in benefits are put in place, to ensure offenders have an understanding that their actions have financial implications, and such confiscation orders should form a mandatory part of every single sentence.
